“Where a blue moon may not exist, a Blue Moon
does. A pink sun does not exist. Next to a Blue
Moon, a Pink Sun does.”

Laura Shumate is an electronic musician and DJ
based in Los Angeles. Her compositions transform
commonplace sounds and compelling melodies
into dissonant forms juxtaposed through
sweeping drones. Through this approach,
Shumate seeks to underline a perceptual
imbalance from within the human condition,
resetting this disproportion through the tactic of
synthesis. The dissonant becomes harmonious,
and sonics traditionally perceived as unwelcome
become inviting and transcendent. Using modular
and traditional synthesizers, samplers and drum
machines, the outcome of her realization is one of
complete immersion into an ecstatic realm of
sound.

Her first release for Crystalline Morphologies, Blue
Moons, Pink Sun, focuses on the human need to
communicate, contextualizing one’s abstract
experiences into a tangible manifestation. These
tracks foreground rhythm and color, imagined and
invented play, concepts generated through the
language of electricity. Real and unreal, these
sounds are not music, yet together they become
songs. It’s pop music for metal boxes, forged on a
Los Feliz kitchen table of modular synthesizers and
cats. The ghosts of Basic Channel’s dub synthesis
clash with Fennesz’s digital glitch, her patches
taking on the character of an analog permutation
of the Mego/Touch spirit of bright noise and
clattering rhythmic implications.

In addition to her solo work, which has included a
release under the name Laurita last year on the
Simballrec label, Shumate is also the host of the
monthly dublab radio show Indoor Cats and
makes up half of the drone duo The Middle Ages
with dublab executive director Alejandro Cohen.

A wonderful sonic journey. This album begs to be listened to front to back on a good pair of headphones. It’s reminiscent of some of the science fiction that I read as a kid…….. the previously unwritten score to some of those great stories. Adam Kocher
